Sedgefield Primary School started during 1927 because the Sedgefield parents refused to take their children through to the school at Ruigtevlei.  The reasons for their decision being: the distance, no permanent roads and the weather condition.  The primary school at Ruigtevlei was officially closed on 30 June 1969.

According to the admission register, the Department of Education officially took over on 6 October 1931 with 11 learners having enrolled.  Thesen & Co. from Knysna built the one and only classroom and the Department had to pay an annual  rental of ,2 per annum.  Later the Department purchased the building from Thesen and Co.
